CES 2020 is shaping up to be the tech event of the season — with some of the biggest names in the industry bringing their A-game to Las Vegas. Nobody is 100% certain about all the gadgets and gizmos that will be present, but from what’s been leaked and teased, CES 2020 looks to be quite the spectacle.
Speaking of which, the items we know will be present at the convention are already pretty impressive. Entries like true bezel-less TV sets, Segway seats and innovative 5G products will be taking center stage at one of the biggest tech events of the year. Of all the companies coming to CES this year, Samsung looks to be among the most formidable. Not only is it bringing a massive, borderless TV to the show, it’s packing a few other innovations that have competitors nervous. From smartphones to smart screens, here’s what we know about Samsung at CES this year.
A smartphone screen for the entire living room
There has been a great deal of fanfare surrounding Samsung’s new The Wall TV, which packs an incredible 8K OLED screen into a show-stopping bezel-less design. Last year, the 146-inch version was made available for pre-order. Now, Samsung is introducing new sizes in 8K — 88, 93, 110 and 150 inches.
But that’s not the only thing this technology company is bringing to CES this year. Tap or click here to see The Wall TV for yourself.
Samsung is already making headlines, thanks to a preview of the company’s latest living room device. Dubbed “The Sero,” meaning “vertical” in Korean, this smart TV set is able to rotate 90 degrees, just like a smartphone, between vertical and horizontal orientations.
The Sero is targeted toward younger consumers, and aims to be an all-in-one social media and entertainment hub for living rooms and bedrooms. While we can’t quite see the appeal of browsing Facebook on the TV, the idea of being able to watch TikTok and YouTube videos filmed horizontally on a big screen is appealing.
Privacy options and Selfie Type make a splash
Not to be left behind by companies like Apple, Samsung plans to offer its smart TV users more privacy options than it did previously. According to Engadget, during a CES preview, Samsung revealed an app called “Privacy Choices” for its family of smart TVs.
Modern smart TVs extensively collect data on user viewing habits and more. The new app aims to give users more of a say in what data is collected by their TV sets, as well as the option to opt out.
Though the preview didn’t feature any live demos of the app, we’re excited to see how it pans out. If you’re looking to make your smart TVs less nosy for the time being, tap or click here to learn how to stop them from watching your activities.
Samsung is also debuting another killer feature for its family of smartphones called Selfie Type. Much like those old laser projection keyboards you could buy from the Sharper Image catalog back in the day, this feature uses your phone’s camera sensor to detect typing motion without the need for a physical keyboard.
This means you can type out full essays and letters just by putting your phone in a stand. It might take some getting used to without any visual feedback, but most typists today rely on muscle memory, anyway. For those of us who hunt-and-peck, it might be a good idea to print out a keyboard layout just in case.
What about phones and tablets?
Absent from many of the early Samsung CES previews is the iconic Galaxy series of smart devices. Whether or not this is intentional is unknown, but one can still expect to see the latest models and features on display at the show — even if there are no proper reveals or announcements.
Samsung is holding off on new announcements until the company’s annual Unpacked event, which kicks off on Feb.11, 2020. Rumor has it the latest phone in the Galaxy family will be announced at the event, which follows previous years’ patterns for reveals.
